Virginal Spring (Flowering Apple Trees)

Apple trees lift their blossom across the whole surface of Virginal Spring, the orchard scene Maurice Denis painted when Les Nabis were flattening landscape into pure decorative pattern. Slender trunks rise in dark verticals, branches loaded with petals of chalk white and faint pink, while young women in long gowns gather on the grass below. He lets flowers and figures share one shallow plane, meadow green and lilac shadow pressed flat, light treated as flat design rather than depth. It belongs in a sunroom or pale bedroom, somewhere linen curtains and whitewashed wood keep company with the season it holds.
