Poppies and marguerites crowd the surface, painted with the loose, confident hand of Hungarian post-impressionist Vaszary János. Virágok, his flower study, gives a humble bouquet the full weight of a grand subject. Look closely and the brushwork does the talking. Petals load up with vermilion and chrome yellow, then thin to bare canvas at the edges. Stems cross at awkward, honest angles. Behind the blooms, a greenish ground flickers between sap green and grey, so the whole arrangement seems to breathe rather than sit still. Dark contours anchor the blossoms where the color runs hottest. A still life like this earns its keep in a kitchen, a sunroom, or above a sideboard, anywhere food, light, and conversation share a table.
