Virágcsendélet 1930

Peonies crowd a glass vase on a tabletop, their blooms packed so tightly the petals overlap in thick ridges of carmine and cream. Vaszary János painted this flower still life, Virágcsendélet, with the loaded brush of a painter who loved pigment for its own sake. The handling is loose and physical. Dabs of vermilion sit wet against white highlights, leaves cut in single sweeps of sap green, and the background dissolves into a soft wash of greyed rose. Light falls from one side, warming the vase rim while the table edge stays in cool shadow. A dining room or sunlit kitchen suits it well, anywhere cut flowers already live on the table.
