Peonies and summer blooms crowd a glass vase in this Hungarian still life by Vaszary János. Virág Csendélet, flower still life in Hungarian, gathers dahlias, poppies and garden roses into one loose, sunlit bouquet. Vaszary paints with thick, confident strokes. Petals load up in rose pink, cadmium red and buttery yellow against a deep, shadowed background. Leaves flicker in olive and viridian. The vase catches a single cool highlight, its glass suggested by a few swift curves rather than careful outline, while the table beneath holds a warm scatter of fallen petals.
