Violet Cliffs

Cliffs rise in bands of violet and mauve, their edges cut hard against a pale sea. Louis Valtat painted this headland with a loaded brush, color laid on thick and unapologetic. The rock face carries strokes of plum, orchid and deep aubergine, shadowed where the stone turns. Above, the sky stays almost white, pushing every purple note forward. Greens creep along the top edge, scrub grass clinging to the height. A coastal study like this belongs in a sunlit hallway or above a writing desk, where its saturated hues can carry a whole wall on their own.
