Vinterlandskap

Snow lies deep over the fells in Vinterlandskap, and Pekka Halonen treats it as something alive, a white ground that holds shadow, wind, and the last low light of a Finnish afternoon. Birch trunks cross the foreground in cool grey and violet, bark scored with dark hatch marks. Blue shadows pool between the drifts. The sun barely clears the treeline, and brushwork stays loose and cold, dragged thin across a paling sky. It suits a study with north light, a reading nook in January, an entryway where guests arrive stamped with cold and meet the stillness of a snowbound forest.
