About this work

Village-row of Houses

Rooftops and chimney stacks run in a crooked line across the village-row of houses by Istvan Nagy. The Hungarian painter stacks tile roofs and plastered walls into one compact street, slopes sagging under weather and years. Earthy ochres and slate blues carry the composition. Washed brushwork roughens each facade, windows sit as small dark punctuations, and the sky above the ridge of buildings stays pale and grainy, almost chalk. Nagy lets paint sit thickly on the walls so the settlement reads built, not sketched. Suited to a hallway or kitchen corner where something rural and unpolished belongs.
