Village Road

A dirt road bends out of a small French village in Village Road, Gustave Loiseau painting of the ordinary countryside he returned to again and again. Loiseau built the lane from short, scrubby strokes, ochre and dusty rose shoulder to shoulder, hedgerows stitched in moss green and umber. Rooftops slip above the trees, terracotta against a sky worked in loose flecks of pale blue. Made for a hallway or a country kitchen, somewhere mornings start slowly and the light changes by the hour.
