Village in Snow

Snow settles over a hill village, and Gustave Loiseau paints the hush. Rooftops pale to chalk against a grey winter sky, chimneys throwing thin smoke into cold air. Loiseau built his surfaces in short, crossed strokes of oil, the technique that made him a patient chronicler of French country towns. Here the brushwork turns pale blue and mauve in the shadows, warm ochre where lamplight or low sun touches a wall. Footprints and wheel ruts cross the snow, drawing the eye down a lane toward the church tower. A quiet study or a bedroom reading corner suits this winter scene, somewhere the calm of a snowbound village can settle over the room.
