Villa Beaulieu, Honfleur

A slate roof and pale facade settle behind garden greenery in Villa Beaulieu, Honfleur, a Felix Vallotton view where every hedge and wall is reduced to flat, deliberate planes. Broad washes of green fill the grounds, each shrub a rounded mass outlined in dark contour. Shadow falls in hard diagonal bands across the path, the steep light Honfleur painters know. Cream walls, closed shutters, a thin chimney line hold the composition still. It belongs in a study or entryway where ordered color quiets a room, a slice of Norman coast kept at calm remove.
