Vignette for Book N. K. Roerich

Scrollwork and stepped forms open onto a small luminous scene, the vignette Nicholas Roerich drew to head the book devoted to his own name. A book vignette of this kind works like a threshold, one glance and the reading begins. Ink lines crosshatch into soft washes of violet, umber and pale gold. The composition tightens toward its center, where a simplified landscape rises: low hills, a slender structure, a sky left almost bare. Every mark is economical, drafted by a hand trained in both archaeology and stage design. It belongs above a writing desk or in a reading nook, beside well-worn spines.
