View on the River Var

The River Var runs wide and pale green beneath a high southern sky, its far bank rendered in loose strokes of olive and sunbaked ochre. Churchill paints the water itself with quick horizontal draggings of cobalt and white, letting the riverbed show through. Shaded trees crowd the near shore, their foliage broken into dabs of viridian and umber, while a strip of gravel beach catches the light along the waterline. The brushwork is candid and unhurried, the kind of plein air work done standing at an easel in the afternoon heat, and it gives the scene the plain honesty of someone recording what he actually saw. Hang it in a study or a hallway where daylight can move across the surface.
