Terracotta rooftops step down a hillside toward the sea in View on the Cote d Azur, Menton, a coastal scene by Roger Fry. Fry builds the slope from deliberate planes of oil paint, structured brushwork in the Post-Impressionist manner he helped name. Olive green foliage presses against lemon yellow facades. The water lies in flat cobalt, and the mountains behind the town hold a violet haze.
