View on Beshtau place duel with Lermontov

Beshtau lifts its five weathered summits above the green Caucasus foothills, ground tied to the Lermontov duel, recorded by Pyotr Konchalovsky in broad, sunlit oil strokes. Rock crowns the broad cone, pale against a sky of piled white cloud. Scrub and hay meadows climb the lower slopes, and the brushwork thickens along ridgelines where shadow pools. Short loaded strokes of ochre and olive push the summer steppe toward the viewer. A study lined with travel journals and old maps suits it well, the mountain keeping watch above a writing desk, a reading chair, a shelf of Russian verse.
