The limestone crag of Wawel Hill rises above the Vistula in this view by Stanisław Wyspiański, castle walls stacked against a wide Polish sky. Wyspiański draws the royal silhouette in quick, searching strokes, the cathedral spires and defensive towers caught in soft grey and rose light. Below, the river carries pale reflections, and the tree line along the bank sits in muted greens and umbers. Every line feels drawn on the spot, pastel chalk dragging across toned paper.
