Dark hulls of the French fleet lie at anchor in the roadstead, funnels trailing smoke into a pale sky. View of Toulon Harbour finds Albert Marquet at his most restrained and exact. Water fills half the composition, a single flat plane of silver grey broken only by wavering reflections of masts and rigging. Quays and low warehouses hold the middle distance, while Mont Faron behind turns muted violet, its slopes reduced to three broad washes of thin oil paint. It belongs in a study or stairway landing, where afternoon light stays low and the scene reads as a window left open onto the Mediterranean.
