About this work

View of the Raguz

Rooftops tumble toward the sea in Edward Okuń View of the Raguz, a cityscape built from terracotta, pale stone and the soft haze of a Dalmatian harbour. Warm ochres and burnt sienna dominate, softened by a sky that fades from grey to a milky horizon. Houses climb in tiers, their tiled roofs pressed close together, while masts and rigging thread through the lower register where the water meets the town. Okuń renders light with a Symbolist hand: shadows lie violet across the facades and the whole scene breathes a late afternoon stillness. Suited to a study, a hallway, or a reading corner with a view of its own.
