Brick piers and open arches frame the loggia at Chartwell, painted by Winston Churchill in confident, sun-seeking strokes. Shade presses cool against the warm terracotta of the masonry. Look closely and the brushwork loosens: dappled light pools across the flagstone floor, climbing roses soften the balustrade, and glimpses of the Kentish Weald shimmer beyond the columns.
