View of the Himalayan Foothills

Foothills roll toward the horizon in low, sunlit swells, the first slopes of the Himalaya rendered in warm ochre and softened blue. This landscape study by Nicholas Roerich is named for exactly what it shows. Color does the work of distance. The nearer hills carry muted terracotta and dry grass tones, each ridge dissolving into cooler cobalt haze as it recedes. Thin, tempera-like strokes keep the surface quiet and matte, letting form breathe without heavy outline. Sky above sits pale and vast, pressing the range down gently. Suited to a study, reading room, or quiet hallway where mountain air is welcome.
