Tile-red roofs spill down a Provençal hillside in Pierre Bonnard View of Le Cannet, Roofs, the village he returned to paint again and again from his hilltop window. Look closely and the houses dissolve into planes of burnt sienna, violet shadow and acid green, garden terraces stitched between them. Bonnard lets the Mediterranean light flatten distance, so the rooftops press forward like a mosaic of warm color rather than recede into the valley below. A sunlit kitchen, a stairwell landing, or a reading nook with a southern exposure would suit its heat and hum perfectly.
