Golden limestone walls ring the old city of Jerusalem, domes and terraces catching the sun, cypress spires dark against the Judean hills. Winston Churchill laid the scene down in quick, loaded strokes of oil paint. The brushwork stays loose and sure, building the sunlit masonry in amber and honey, then flicking cool shadow into the archways. A dome holds a single note of turquoise above the rooftops, olive groves silver the valley floor, and the sky burns pale at the horizon.
