Minarets and flat rooftops stretch toward the horizon below three great pyramids. Winston Churchill painted this view of Cairo from the desert edge, looking down across the city from the Giza plateau. Olive and violet settle into the buildings while sand tones hold the foreground. The pyramids sit massive and quiet on the left, painted in loose, sunlit brushwork, and a pale sky washes over the whole Nile valley. Warm ochre dominates, broken by cooler grays where the city haze begins.
