View from a Window of the Huangpu River

Fujishima Takeji looks out across the Huangpu River through a latticed window, framing junks and steamers as they thread the brown-gold water of old Shanghai. The composition splits into two worlds: dark window mullions cut a grid across the scene, while beyond them oil paint lays down slabs of ochre water, pale rooftops, and a hazy pearl sky. Masts tilt against the current, their rigging scratched in with fine brushwork, and a distant shoreline dissolves into humid mist. Suited to a study or reading room, where a window onto another river makes the wall feel like a doorway.
