A whitewashed church tower rises above a jumble of terracotta roofs in View at Szentendre, a Hungarian landscape by Janos Tornyai. The small Danube town sits low against the water, painted with the unhurried eye of a plein air artist. Szentendre unfolds in warm ochre and dusty rose, its tiled rooftops catching slant afternoon light. Tornyai works the paint thickly along the church walls and leaves the riverbank loose and sketchy, where moored boats and willows dissolve into pale blue haze. Narrow lanes wind downhill between gardens, and the whole scene hums with the quiet traffic of a provincial afternoon. It belongs above a writing desk or in a hallway that faces east, where the morning light can pick out those rooftops again.
