Viaduct in London

A great brick viaduct strides across the page, its arches marching under a low London sky. Mstislav Dobuzhinsky drew it with the stage-trained eye he brought to every city he ever rendered. Look closely and the structure gives up its details: sooty piers, engine smoke curling above the parapet, tiny chimneys and gable roofs huddled in the arches below. Fine pen linework and diluted grey washes build the mist, while deeper ink pools in the shadowed vaults where carriages pass. An urban scene of iron, smoke and stone, at home above a desk in a study, in a hallway, or beside a reading chair where city lovers sit.
