Vesuvius, From Pompeii

Vesuvius rises behind the ruins of Pompeii, its slope catching the light while the buried city stretches out below. Churchill painted the scene during his travels in Italy, choosing a vantage point few visitors bother to find. Smoke or cloud drifts from the summit. The color work carries the painting: dusty rose and grey across the mountainside, olive and ochre where excavated walls and fallen columns break the plain. Loose, confident brushstrokes suggest rubble, cypress, and sun without laboring over a single stone. The sky holds a pale Mediterranean haze. A natural fit for a study or hallway, where the volcano over the ancient town gives a long view to anyone passing by.
