Vesubio

Smoke climbs from the crater of Vesuvius in Vesubio, a volcanic landscape by José Garnelo. The mountain fills the horizon, its slopes dark against a sky lit from below by buried fire. Ochre and umber break across the lower slopes where lava once cooled, and a smoke column drifts in pale grey veils, thickening near the summit. Deep reds burn at the mouth of the crater while the foreground holds cool shadow, all built in layered oil glazes. It suits a study or library lined with leather and dark wood, where the ember glow of an eruption holds its own against shelves and lamplight.
