Versailles Mirror at Trianon

Windless water fills a sunken basin, doubling the sky, a straight gravel walk and one strolling figure in a plumed hat. Alexandre Benois titled the sheet Versailles, Mirror at Trianon. Thin washes over pencil lay in the scene, gouache thickening each highlight: grey green pool, a facade of pale cut stone, dark cones of yew, paths the color of biscuit. A courtier in red waits at the edge, a single fleck of warmth against all that silver. Made for a quiet study or a hallway that wants depth, it suits panelled rooms, low lamplight and collectors of formal European garden scenes.
