A long alley cuts through the royal park at Versailles in this watercolor by Alexandre Benois, drawn from his celebrated series on the French court. Manicured geometry rules the scene. Clipped hedges line the gravel walk in deep greens, while stone balustrades and a distant facade catch a soft grey light. Small figures in eighteenth century dress stroll the avenue, their silhouettes tiny against the vast scale of the grounds.
