Versailles

Clipped lime trees line a long gravel alley at Versailles while a lone figure in dark court dress walks toward a fountain, the subject Alexandre Benois returned to again and again. Pale washes of grey-green and olive build the foliage; ochre gravel catches thin sunlight; a stone god poses at the basin rim. Grand emptiness rules here, the Sun King diminished by hedges, statues and water arranged in strict geometry. A study, a library corner, a hallway in low light: somewhere quiet where the muted palette and long perspective can work slowly on the eye.
