Venta. Finland. Nicholas Roerich sets a low shoreline against a pale northern sky, water lying flat and silvery between rounded headlands. The brushwork is economical, almost dry, each stroke carrying the weight of tempera rather than oil gloss. Cool greys dominate, broken by ochre at the bank and a deep green band of forest that runs unbroken along the far shore. The light sits low and even, the kind that flattens shadow and lets distance read through tone alone. Roerich builds the scene in thin, layered passes, leaving the ground faintly visible beneath the colour. A quiet study or reading room, done in stone blues and undyed linen, suits it well.
