Venetian Palace, Blackshore on the Blyth

Water laps beneath a tall Venetian palace in Charles Rennie Mackintosh's Venetian Palace, Blackshore on the Blyth, where Suffolk marshland borrows the architecture of a far grander lagoon. The facade rises in watercolor washes of ochre and weathered rose, its arched windows sketched with the firm, rhythmical line Mackintosh brought to all his architectural studies. Reflections break into loose horizontal strokes on the tidal Blyth, and the sky above stays a pale, washed grey that lets the masonry do the talking. Every brush passage balances precision against the soft bleed of wet paper. A study, a hallway beside a window, or a quiet reading nook suits its hushed, maritime temperament well.
