Velocity of Cars and Light

Headlights streak forward as long ribbons of white and violet, cars reduced to arrows of force cutting through the dark. Giacomo Balla paints the machine at full throttle, motion itself the true subject. Sweeping diagonals dominate the surface. Pale beams fan out from unseen lamps, their rays crossing in translucent layers over deep blue and black ground. Red and ochre accents trace the paths of wheels and fenders, each stroke following the direction of travel so the eye accelerates along with the picture. The brushwork is fast, directional, almost calligraphic. Suited to a hallway or modern office where movement and energy set the tone.
