Veliky Novgorod. Kremlin

Round brick towers rise from grassy embankments, and behind them the helmet domes of Saint Sophia catch a grey northern sky. Pyotr Konchalovsky titled the scene Veliky Novgorod. Kremlin. The fortress wall runs low and red across the middle ground, its battlements sketched in short, loaded strokes of oil. Fresh greenery crowds the foreground, birch trunks pale against shadow, while a dusty road leads toward a gate tower. Pigment sits thick, almost sculpted. A study or library with stone tones and dark wood suits it; the red of the walls warms bookshelves, and the domes echo brass lamp fittings.
