Vase with Roses and Chrysanthemums

Roses and chrysanthemums crowd a tall vase, painted by Ipolit Strambu with the confidence of a still life that knows its own weight. The arrangement overflows the rim. Petals and leaves jostle for space, none of it tidy. Deep reds of the roses sit against the pale, quilled heads of chrysanthemums, both set in cool shadowed greens. The vase itself carries a glazed sheen, its curved body catching light along one flank while the background sinks into muted olive and umber. Brushwork stays loose in the foliage, firmer where petals turn. A dining room or hallway with plain plaster walls gives this floral still life room to breathe, the color doing all the talking.
