Vase with Lilac

A single spray of lilac leans from a dark ceramic vase, its purple panicles catching the light against a muted background. Octav Bancila painted the flower close up, letting petals and glass do all the talking. The bloom dominates the upper half, clusters of violet and lilac gray breaking into dozens of small four-lobed flowers. Below, the vase holds a deep earthenware tone, its shoulder rounded and weighted, grounding the airy mass above. The brushwork in the leaves is quick and wet, still-life economy at its best. Suited to a reading nook or bedside wall, where one flower, honestly observed, is enough company.
