Vase with Chrysanthemums

Chrysanthemums crowd a tall vase in this Stefan Luchian still life, blooms stacked in heavy ivory and cream layers that spill over the rim and bend toward the light. Luchian paints each petal with thick, deliberate strokes, piling whites and butter yellows against a deep, muted ground so the flowers seem to push forward off the surface. The vase itself carries a faint green glaze, its rounded belly anchoring the loose, airy mass of blossoms above. Dry brushwork in the background leaves visible weave and texture, a hallmark of the Romanian post-impressionist touch. A natural fit above a sideboard in a dining room or on a sunlit living room wall.
