Vase with Carnations

Carnations crowd a shallow bowl, their jagged petals catching the light in dusty rose and deep carmine. Stefan Luchian built this still life from layered brushwork, letting the flower heads spill over the rim against a muted ground. Behind them, a slender vase rises in soft greens, its glassy surface holding faint reflections. Leaves cut dark diagonals across the composition, steadying all that exuberant color. The paint sits thick in places, thin and scraped in others, giving the blooms a tactile, almost velvet presence. A dining room or sunlit parlor suits its warmth, where the carnation motif can glow against plain plaster walls.
