Vase with Anemonies and Empty Vase

Two vases hold the whole composition. In Vase with Anemonies and Empty Vase, Pierre Bonnard pairs a crowded bouquet with a bare vessel, petals in coral, violet and white crowding over a dark table edge. The filled vase bristles with anemones, stems crossing, cups of red and mauve pressed together until the flowers blur into one mass of color. Beside it the second vase waits, glazed and vacant, its pale surface catching whatever light the room offers. Bonnard lets the empty one carry as much weight as the bloom, a quiet counterpoint of ceramic and shadow. Suited to a dining room or a breakfast nook, where flowers and morning light actually live.
