Vase of Flowers

Zinnias, daisies and bellflowers crowd a simple earthenware vase in this still life by Gustave Loiseau. The arrangement spills loose and unforced, blooms tipping past the rim as if just gathered from a garden that morning. Loiseau builds each petal with the same short, enameled brushstrokes he used on his river canvases. Dabs of vermilion, chrome yellow and violet sit over a cool grey ground, the blooms catching light while the background stays hushed and dim. Stems cross in the glassy waterline, visible through the vase, and the table edge tilts gently beneath the weight of the bouquet. A natural companion for a kitchen, breakfast nook or sunroom, where its garden-fresh color keeps the wall lively through every season.
