Vase of Flowers

A small bouquet holds the whole picture together. Vase of Flowers by Edouard Vuillard gathers blossoms into one dense cluster, the petals pressed so close they read as a single patch of color. Reds and pinks sit thick against pale leaves, the vase itself barely more than a suggestion of outline and shadow. Vuillard lets the background dissolve, so the flowers seem to hover in a quiet interior light, the brushwork loose and close, almost stitched into the surface.
