Blocks of buildings crowd the picture plane, stacked and tilting in the manner of a town seen from a hillside at dusk. Scheiber Hugó named the composition simply Város, city, and let the architecture do the talking. Rooftops read as flat planes of brick red, slate blue, and mustard, their edges softened by graphite outlines and hatched shading. Windows appear as quick dark notches, punched into the facades without perspective logic. Chimneys lean. The whole surface carries the grainy texture of a hand-pressed graphic work, ink settling unevenly into paper tooth, so each color block feels slightly weathered, as if the town itself had aged into its palette. Hung between bookshelves or above a writing desk in a home study, the crowded skyline rewards long looking, one rooftop at a time.
