Valley Splendor

A California valley opens under afternoon light, grasses running gold toward stands of dark oaks. Granville Redmond named this scene Valley Splendor, and the title fits what the eye meets: low hills, open sky, a floor of wildflowers in bloom. Painted brushwork carries the color. Purple lupine and orange poppies scatter through the foreground, laid in short impasto strokes that catch the light. The oaks stand as near-silhouettes against a sky washed in pale blue, their canopies built from layered greens. In the distance the hills soften into violet haze, the sort of atmosphere the plein air painters of the region chased all morning to hold. A sunlit reading nook or a bright stairwell suits it well.
