Melting ice drifts down a swollen river, while log cabins wait at the waterline in Ust Krestishche. Spring. Flood by Eugene Lanceray. The scene opens at the moment the thaw takes hold. Snow slumps off sagging roofs in slabs of grey and violet. Lanceray, drawing in ink and wash, pools pale silver across the flooded meadows and hatches the bare trees in quick dark strokes. Figures cross the water in a flat-bottomed boat, one pole pushed deep into the current, the bank dissolving behind them into wash. A natural companion for a study or reading room, where quiet Russian landscapes and Mir Iskusstva-era draftsmanship can carry the wall.
