Upper Hudson

Autumn hills crowd the far bank as the river slides past in one broad, unhurried sweep. Upper Hudson is Robert Henri at his most direct, a landscape built from fast, loaded strokes of oil paint. Ochre and russet foliage break against olive thickets, and the water takes a cold grey blue from the sky over the ridgeline. Brushwork stays visible everywhere, short dabs along the treeline, longer drags where current flattens near a gravel shoal. Set it in a study with worn leather chairs, an entryway that catches low morning light, or a library corner where quiet looking rewards attention.
