Untitled

Snow covers a broad frozen river, its surface streaked with pale blue shadow and the low amber light of a Latvian winter afternoon. This untitled winter landscape belongs to Vilhelms Purvitis, the painter who made the northern snowscape his lifelong subject. Look closely and the scene builds in layers: mounds of snow on the near bank, rendered in thick impasto whites and cool greys; a line of dark spruce holding the horizon; thin ice along the edges where ochre earth shows through. The brushwork is heavy and deliberate, each drift modeled in paint rather than outlined. It settles naturally into a study or reading room, anywhere a quiet, cold-lit view rewards long looking.
