Untitled

A seated figure resolves out of angled planes, the torso built from overlapping facets of ochre and slate. Untitled by Jacques Villon holds its subject half in geometry, half in flesh. Crosshatched line darkens the shadow side of every turn, disciplined etched texture laid down stroke by stroke. A tabletop tilts forward in a hard diagonal, the room behind it thinned to pale suggestion. Rose and umber warm the ground while cool grey edges push the body into view. It belongs in a study lined with books, or an entryway where fractured forms give visitors something to pause over on the way through.
