Underground Chud

Cave mouths open beneath a ledgescape of stone, and the hidden Chud dwell within. Underground Chud belongs to Nicholas Roerich cycle of Russian legends, where folklore takes the form of mountain and shadow. Deep violet and slate dominate. The rock faces are built in flat, overlapping planes of tempera-like color, their edges crisp as cut shale. A low entrance glows faintly at center, suggesting bell vaults and buried treasure guarded by the vanished tribe. Frost-toned highlights pick out ridgelines above. Roerich painted the Chud as earth itself holding a secret. This somber legend suits a study or library, beside maps and old books.
