Two Poodles

Two poodles, coats a froth of cream and apricot curls, occupy the whole foreground of Two Poodles, an intimate domestic subject by the French post impressionist Pierre Bonnard. The brushwork stays loose and closely hatched, violet shadow pooling beneath each muzzle while ochre floorboards glow behind. A patterned carpet and the tilted edge of a table break the room into planes of citron, cobalt and rose, sunlight falling in dappled patches over their curled backs. It belongs in a reading nook or a sunlit hallway, anywhere a love of dogs and intimist color can be lived with daily.
