Twin Lakes, High Sierra

Twin lakes hold the last of the daylight in a granite bowl high above the tree line. Guy Rose set his easel among the High Sierra and caught the moment when cold water turns to hammered pewter and the first shadow climbs the eastern ridge. Granite dominates the foreground, its surfaces broken into short, loaded strokes of violet grey and chalk white. The water itself carries narrow bands of cerulean and slate, split by a spit of sun-bleached stone. Sparse pines lean at the margins, their needles dabbed in near-black green against snow-lit slopes. A study, a cabin hallway, or a reading nook with north light would suit this mountain scene well, wherever quiet and altitude are welcome.
